Well System Glossary
Plain-language definitions of private well system terms and components.
C
An electrical component that starts and protects the submersible pump motor. Contains capacitors and overload protection.
D
The pipe that runs from the surface down to the submersible pump inside the well casing.
J
A surface-mounted pump that draws water up from the well using suction. Used for shallower wells.
P
A tank that stores pressurized water between pump cycles and maintains consistent water pressure in your home.
An electrical switch that signals the pump to start when pressure drops and stop when pressure reaches the set level.
A fitting that allows the water supply line to exit the well casing below the frost line.
S
A pump that operates underwater inside the well casing, pushing water up to the surface.
The level of water in the well when the pump is not running — the natural standing water level.
When a well pump turns on and off rapidly, usually caused by a failed or waterlogged pressure tank.
W
The pipe or lining that lines the borehole of a drilled well, preventing collapse and contamination.
The above-ground portion of a well, including the casing cap, pitless adapter, and electrical connections.
